If you’re searching for a reliable, high-performance cold-weather jacket, the Snugpak Tomahawk Insulated Jacket may be just what you need. Designed with precision and crafted from premium materials, this jacket offers the perfect balance of warmth, comfort, and functionality, making it ideal for outdoor enthusiasts, survivalists, or anyone facing harsh winter conditions. This jacket arrived just in time from Laura Burgess Marketing, as we just got this winter’s first snow in Northern Virginia and I wanted to test it out.

Design & Fit:

The Tomahawk features a technical fit that’s snug yet comfortable, allowing for easy layering or use as an outer shell. The design includes an extended scooped back, ensuring extra warmth and coverage when bending or moving, helping to keep drafts at bay. The jacket also features an elasticated drawcord-adjustable hem, allowing you to cinch it for a more tailored fit and to trap additional warmth. I went one step further with the design and had a tailor add hook and loop fasteners to the jacket. I felt it gave me a more snug fit around the waist, and I did not prefer the scooped back look for daily wear. The drawcord is sufficient to keep the cold out, but I wanted a more tailored look.

Insulated, fully detachable zip-off peaked hood with adjustable elasticated drawcord and cord locks

A standout design element is the detachable, zip-off peaked hood, offering great versatility for unpredictable weather. Whether you’re braving a snowstorm or just need extra warmth, you can easily adjust or remove the hood. It’s insulated and features an elasticated drawcord with cord locks for a customizable fit.

Insulation:

The jacket’s insulation uses Softie® superfine yarns, which offer a down-like feel without the added weight. This advanced insulation traps more air than standard materials, helping to keep you warmer without bulk. Softie® insulation excels in wet conditions as well, retaining warmth better than traditional synthetics, making it an excellent choice for unpredictable weather. The weather dropped to about 20 degrees on our first day of snow, and the wind wasn’t bothersome due to the insulating properties of the jacket. I wore the jacket with a wool scarf I just received for Christmas.

Windproof, breathable and water repellent

Weather Protection:

The Tomahawk shines when it comes to weather resistance. Its Paratex Micro outer fabric is both windproof and weather-resistant, providing effective protection against the elements. Though not fully waterproof, it offers reliable protection against light rain and snow—ideal for most cold-weather outdoor activities. Plus, it’s breathable, allowing you to regulate your body temperature during more intense physical activity to avoid overheating.

Comfort & Convenience:

Snugpak has clearly prioritized comfort with this jacket. A lined neck warmer and fold-out chin guard keep your neck and chin warm, especially on windy days. The deep, hand-warmer-style pockets are lined with soft fabric, ensuring that your hands stay warm even in sub-zero temperatures. My sole issue with the jacket is the size of the jacket pocket openings. The opening is small, and I think it must be larger for those with larger hands or for those who carry items such as mobile phones or snacks for quick access.

For added convenience, the jacket includes multiple zippered pockets, including internal and external chest pockets and a sleeve pocket on the upper left arm for small items like an ID or pen. Adjustable hook-and-loop cuffs help keep the cold out and the warmth in, ensuring a snug fit at the wrists.

The Tomahawk also includes a mesh-bottomed stuff sack for easy packing and carrying, making it compact and easy to stow in a backpack—perfect for outdoor trips where space is at a premium.

Final Thoughts:

The Snugpak Tomahawk Insulated Jacket is a top-notch cold-weather jacket that delivers on all fronts. Its innovative insulation, weather resistance, and thoughtful features, such as the detachable hood and multiple pockets, make it an excellent choice for anyone in need of a reliable winter jacket. Whether you’re hiking, camping, or simply navigating freezing temperatures, this jacket offers the protection and warmth you need. The Tomahawk is the warmest option in Snugpak’s lineup, with a comfort temperature rating of -15°C / 5°F, making it perfect for serious winter conditions. For milder conditions, the Snugpak Arrowhead is better suited, while the Spearhead sits in between, providing a versatile option for a wider range of weather. Overall, the Tomahawk is a standout cold-weather jacket that strikes a perfect balance between performance and comfort. If you’re looking for a durable, versatile jacket to tackle harsh winter conditions, the Snugpak Tomahawk is definitely worth considering. Definitely worth the money spent, in my opinion.
