If you have spent any time at the PX, you’ve seen them. You’ve probably used them and not realized it. What you knew though, was that whatever pack made by Sandpiper of California (SOC) you were using, and for whatever reason, it stood up to the abuse. Aside from the PX/BX stores, you can find SOG gear at other retailers, and for a good reason.
The company has been making gear bags and packs for over 30 years. Right here in the USA. What’s even more awesome is that from their small company family roots to the current established manufacturer with large scale design and production capabilities, and a sister company of their own, SOC remained as loyal to their consumer and humble in their approach as a when they started.
I didn’t think much when Mike asked me if I want to review the Small Range Bag by SOC. I mean a bag where you carry range stuff is pretty straight forward. So I was even more surprised at how functional and well -built it was, having no expectations. The bag comes with one large compartment, which can fit anything from an ammo can, to a variety of weapon cases, to anything you would want to throw in there. It’s also built tough enough to carry the full weight of any of the above.
There is a Velcro compartment along one side of the bag, with a smooth Velcro panel and a modular bungee retention system. This allows you to secure a firearm, holstered or not, and customize the interior with ammo pouches, medical items, or your favorite patch collection if that’s your bag. (cue Austin Powers) Along the same side are a long bottom zippered pocket which could easily fit long brushes or a large optic, and a square pocket which can accommodate a phone, wallet, or additional magazines.
The same pocket has a low key Velcro identification panel. The other side of the Small Range Bag features two large and two smaller pockets. The large ones will accommodate AR magazines, cleaning kits or your favorite sammiches. The smaller ones will hold individual brushes, patches, tools, keys, or red dot. There are also smaller loops inside which will hold lip balm or pens.
Each end features a large pocket with adjustable bungee retention. I fit an IFAK into one, a coffee mug, water bottle, Sriracha sauce, or whatever it is you just need to throw in there in a hurry. What I really like about all of this, is that it doesn’t look like a range bag. It actually looks like whatever you want it or need it to be. EDC bag, laptop or table carrier, go-bag, overnight bag, or (I have to kick my own ass for writing this) man purse. There isn’t a ridiculous amount of pockets or tacticool features that make this bag stand out too much. The thoughtful and very functional features are what truly impressed me about this SOC product.
There is a long shoulder strap which is tough enough to carry however much stuff you need to cram into the Small Range Bag and a shoulder pad which will keep you from cuts and bruises. Drink water! Two regular carry handles are also there, and can secured by a sewed-on Velcro wrap. At $51.99 list price, tough as nails construction, lifetime warranty, and great customer service, the Small Range Bag by SOC is huge on ability to carry your stuff to the range, or your trunk monkey to the next meeting.
It comes in black and Coyote, and can be found at SOC’s website. (Side note: reading the one review posted on Amazon, I agree that the bag is not fitted like some range bags, and doesn’t have cute foamy sides. However it is not flimsy.
The main compartment provides sufficient space for ammunition, cameras, electronics, or any types of gear. Features include a hidden compartment with a modular holster designed to fit most handguns. Equipped with six general purpose pockets sized to fit a variety of accessories. Two external pockets feature the bungee and barrel lock system.
