On Saturday, a division of Ukraine’s military shared a video claiming to depict a Russian artillery unit firing upon its own soldiers who were attempting to surrender.
The video was posted by Ukraine’s 3rd Separate Assault Infantry Brigade on its Telegram channel and was allegedly recorded in the Donetsk village of Andriivka. This release came a day after Ukraine’s General Staff announced that the 3rd Assault Brigade had regained control of Andriivka from Russian forces. The assault brigade referred to the conflict in Andriivka as a “lightning operation” conducted over two days.
Andriivka is situated approximately six miles southwest of the long-contested city of Bakhmut. The village’s liberation coincides with Kyiv’s ongoing counteroffensive, which has been achieving success in various regions of Ukraine. Since launching the counteroffensive in early June, Kyiv has claimed to have retaken over a dozen villages in the Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk regions that were previously occupied by Russia.
The video, shared on Telegram by the 3rd Separate Assault Infantry Brigade, has not been independently verified by Newsweek. It shows Ukrainian troops compelling Russian soldiers to lie on the ground after they surrendered. Shortly afterward, an artillery round is seen detonating near both Ukrainian and Russian troops.

Reportedly, the Ukrainian troops involved in the incident were unharmed by the artillery explosion, but the 3rd Separate Assault Infantry Brigade stated that one of the Russian soldiers was killed. According to a translation by the Kyiv Post, the assault unit stated that one of the Russians was “captured in pieces, two are lucky and are taken out to live. Luck plays a role in war.”
The Telegram post from the brigade described the incident as “just a fantastic story that happened during the storming of Andriivka.” The post also mentioned that the assault group from the mechanized battalion captured another group of prisoners while the enemy, realizing the village was lost and its soldiers were surrendering en masse, ordered to “fire on their own.”
In a Facebook post discussing the recapture of Andriivka, Ukraine’s General Staff of Armed Forces stated that “the defense forces of Ukraine during the offensive actions had partial success in the area of Klishchiivka.”
“During the assault operations, they had success and mastered Andriivka, causing the enemy significant losses in manpower and equipment,” the post added.
