The U.S. is set to significantly boost its production of 155mm artillery shells, with plans to reach 100,000 shells per month by 2025, according to the Pentagon’s acquisition chief, Bill LaPlante. Currently producing 28,000 shells monthly, this figure is projected to rise to 57,000 per month by next spring. This increase aims to support Ukraine’s ongoing counteroffensive and replenish depleted U.S. stockpiles. Additionally, other countries are contributing to 155mm shell production, with the European Union launching an initiative to produce one million rounds of shells. However, the need for finalized contracts before production can increase was emphasized. LaPlante is planning to meet with other countries’ armament directors in Europe to discuss efforts to boost 155mm shell production and other weapon-related initiatives.
