Securing Assets with a Simple Solution
When people are looking for security, you first have to identify what exactly they want to protect. What are their key assets and what type of security is necessary to protect them?
Do they need to protect themselves? Their business? Their home? Their information?
What they need to protect is important, but after that the question (when we’re perfectly honest with ourselves) is do they want security or do they want to feel secure? I’ll always find the practical security requirements and ensure they’re fulfilled, but it’s important to determine how much “peace of mind” people need.
Believe it or not, there’s a difference. It’s the reason some people buy a gun, shoot it once (maybe) and then shove in it a bedroom drawer and decide they’re safe. It’s the reason some people have a home security alarm, but never turn it on when they leave the house. It’s the reason the entire Transportation Security Administration exists in the United States.
The way levels of security are decided is by balancing the need for security and the need for access. We decide how much security we can handle before it becomes too much of a problem. We may have two locks and a key card reader on an office door, but if I decide that using the key to turn both bolts is annoying and what is on the other side of the door is not that important then I’ll just use the key card reader because the need for security is not as great as my need for convenient access.
Because of this difference between being secure and wanting to feel secure, I often offer the same basic advice to someone for security. The question I use to give this advice is the same for someone asking about securing their home or apartment as it is to someone who is looking to secure a large office building in a big city or a massive factory in a unsafe area.

Many people are afraid of the dark as a child. Some are even still afraid of it as adults and most of us are still made uneasy by it. Providing lighting that works and lights up an area like a Christmas tree on fire will make someone feel safer. Being out of the dark and into the light is an important psychological aid, especially if we fear a specific threat such as crime, terrorism, or a safety risk. This holds true if I’m talking about having lighting at a main entrance to an office building, throughout a parking lot, along a fence at an industrial site, or around my house.
So that helps to make me feel safer and more secure, but what will actually make me more secure?
Same answer. Well-lit areas deter crime by making a hidden area to break into a car or assault someone harder to find. Additionally, they support existing security measures such as allowing police or security officers to see areas which would normally be completely black, to give security cameras a greater view (but this can also limit a camera’s view if it has a capable night vision/IR function), or, if you use motion detecting lights at your home which are relatively inexpensive and easy to install, they can even alert us to a potential intruder or threat. Motion detecting lights are also a great tool for deterring criminals because when a criminal is suddenly blinded by lights in an area they were just trying to sneak through or into, they tend to not stick around much longer.
Lights are easy, they serve a practical purpose, they make us feel safer, and they provide a surprisingly good extra level of security as well. Worried about protecting your home or business?
