Work shirts have become a menswear casual style staple due to their functionality and rugged appeal. Due to their popularity, there’s an abundance of work shirt options from which to choose these days. The new Vertx® Machinehead Shirt is a work shirt with a difference. In the words of Vertx, it offers a workwear appearance with tactical versatility. It’s a great everyday, go anywhere shirt

When carrying concealed, keeping a low profile can be tough. You need apparel that’s up to the task. The Machinehead Shirt features CCW compatible construction designed to provide extra coverage in any concealment position. It has a relaxed fit (looser fitting than a regular shirt without being baggy) with underarm gussets and an angled back yoke for freedom of movement. The shirt has a small amount of stretch for comfort and mobility. If a shirt is too fitted, the outline of the gun winds up printing. The Machinehead Shirt has no visible logos.

Machinehead Shirt has two chest pockets with angled pocket flaps for easier access. There are also two discreet Napoleon pockets with hook and loop closure to add secured storage for important documents and other gear.

The shirt has a straight hem with a drop back for wearing untucked. The hem is long enough to ensure coverage without being so long that it reduces quick weapon access. The straight hem gives the shirt a more finished look” when worn untucked than a shirt with curved tails that’s designed for tucking. The straight hem also has better side coverage. The drop-back hem gives added coverage when bending and during strenuous activity, without being so long as to restrict clearing of the garment when seated.

The low-profile front placket has metal snap closure that looks stylish and allows the shirt to be ripped open for quick breakaway and easy clearing of the garment. It has low-profile hem pockets on the bottom of the front placket that allow weights to be added to aid in clearing or for stashing other small items. There are also hidden pockets in the cuffs.

The shirt has a roll collar (stand collar that folds over) with sewn channels/pockets on the underside for collar stays (stays not included) and other small tools. There’s a comms loop inside the back collar for cord management of comms wires and earpiece.

The two collar stay pockets, two hem pockets and two cuff pockets together offer a total of six hidden mini stash pockets that allow you to pre-load items up to 2” long. The mini stash pockets may be employed for stashing handcuff keys and/or other small e&e tools when operating in hostile areas or non-permissive environments.

There are two chest patch pockets with a stylish angled pocket flap for easier access. Each chest patch pocket has a single sewn pen pocket. There are also two hidden Napoleon pockets (chest pockets with vertical opening) behind the chest patch pockets with hook and loop closure to add secured storage for important documents and other gear.

The shirt is made of 5.75 oz stretch twill fabric, a comfortable soft-textured semi-elastic type of twill. The fabric is a blend of 63% polyester / 34% cotton / 3% spandex. It has a lightly brushed surface to give it a soft, comfortable nap. The fabric is fade, wrinkle and stain resistant. It’s moisture wicking and has anti-odor treatments.

Twill is a versatile, sporty fabric weave. It’s characterized by its pattern of distinct diagonal lines. Although twill doesn’t breathe as well as plain-weave and basketweave fabrics, it’s more durable and resistant to wear. The shirt is bar tack stitched at stress points for added strength.

Machinehead Shirt has six hidden mini stash pockets, including low-profile hem pockets for weights or other similarly sized items. Low-profile snap front closure allows you to quickly break away and clear your garment.

The Machinehead Shirt is available in both long sleeve and short sleeve versions. The long sleeve shirt has adjustable snap-closure cuffs. Both the long and short sleeve versions are currently available in your choice of three colorways: Exhaust; Space Force Grey; and Depth Charge.

Vertx provided me with the Machinehead Long Sleeve Shirt in the Depth Charge colorway. I opted for the long sleeve shirt as it’s more versatile. I can always just roll up the sleeves when desired. The Depth Charge colorway is an attractive but nondescript dark blue. All things being equal, darker shirts better conceal than lighter colored shirts since they visually print less to the eye.

The Machinehead Shirt is a versatile utilitarian shirt that looks great even when you’re not breaking a sweat. It can also be worn as a laid-back alternative to a jacket or over-shirt. In this regard it makes for excellent layering during transitional periods.
