Vertx®, was founded a little over a decade ago, when its parent company, the Fechheimer Brothers Company, was approached by a federal agency looking for comfortable low-profile pants with the all of the functionality as the tactical pants they were wearing at the time but didn’t scream “shoot me first.”
Leveraging experience gained in making US military uniforms since 1842, they came out with what they felt was the most low-profile tactical pants in the industry. Vertx expanded more into low-profile clothing over time, which eventually brought them into bags and packs so their same customers could carry all the equipment they needed while remaining discreet. There simply isn’t anything else like them on the market.
All Vertx bags and packs (except for the new ultra-compact S.O.C.P.® Sling) feature a weapon-compatible concealed carry platform with VELCRO® brand loop lining and a Rapid Access Pull™ tab. They also are designed to take an ballistic armor panel. Vertx has partnered with Premier Body Armor and DFNDR Armor™ to make ballistic armor panels sized specifically for its bags.
Vertx bags and packs have evolved over time along with their changing roles. This necessitated a redesign of the bags, making some of the compartments that would traditionally have been used for weapons deeper and stronger to support larger and heavier weapons. They also switched to stronger US-made VELCRO on the inside of the bags to hold all of the equipment, as well other design changes based on user input.
Vertx Dead Letter Sling Bag
The Vertx Dead Letter Sling™ is a recent addition to the Vertx line of packs and bags. Introduced in 2019, The Dead Letter Sling Pack replaced the Vertx Courier in the Vertx line-up.
Although a backpack more evenly distributes weight on the shoulders for comfort and is easier to run with (especially with heavier loads), a sling bag is ideal for confined spaces, rapid access to contents, security in crowds and when driving or seated in vehicles — you simply swing it around to your front.
The Dead Letter Sling is designed so that it can be carried in a variety of configurations. It can be worn as a traditional messenger bag or, by simply switching the clip, one of Vertx’s traditional sling bags. Lefties take note, it’s also the first truly ambidextrous Vertx sling bag.
The bag is oriented correctly in the upright position no matter how you configure it. Change over your Rapid Access Pull tab and your ready to go. Reconfiguration takes only seconds to do.
The bar tacks on the back are color-coded for right or or left-handed sling positions — red is for a right-handed draw and blue is for a left-handed draw. The subtle color-coding makes reconfiguration between right/left carry easy.
The Dead Letter Sling features upscale messenger bag styling that doesn’t look at all out of place in any professional or business environment. It looks professional, not tactical. It pairs nicely with a business suit. Plus, it has all of the necessary features for EDC. It’s a mid-size 12 L sling pack, with exterior dimensions of 19” H x 13.5” W x 5” D. It weighs 3.2 pounds.
As is the case with all Vertx products, the design, workmanship, and materials used on the Dead Letter Sling are absolutely top notch. The body is constructed of weatherproof 500D CORDURA® nylon with synthetic leather accents. 500D CORDURA was chosen for the optimal balance of strength and light weight. Bonded nylon thread is used throughout with critical seams and attachment points bartacked for extra durability. YKK® self-repairing nylon coil zippers and Duraflex® (D-Flex®) plastic hardware are used throughout. The zippers are equipped with quiet positive-grip zipper pull-tabs. The Dead Letter Sling has a 3-D molded high-density closed-cell foam back panel that enhances airflow and comfort and has a pass-through for rolling luggage handles. There are no visible logos.
The adjustable shoulder strap on the Dead Letter Sling is thickly padded and has ventilating mesh on the bottom for maximum comfort. The strap is equipped with quick release buckles and has multiple webbing attachment points for accessories. It has an adjustable waist/sternum strap to distribute weight and manage loads. The waist/sternum strap is configurable for ambidextrous use and can be tucked behind the molded back panel when not in use. The Dead Letter Sling is also equipped with a padded satchel/attaché-style carry handle. It gives you a lot of options.
The front of the Dead Letter Sling has a zippered front flap which conceals a loop-faced MOLLE/PALS webbing panel. The front flap may be stowed behind the panel for ready access to items mounted on the panel. The top of the flap has a nylon webbing pull tab that’s secured by hook and loop. It allows the flap to be unzipped for rapid access while keeping the panel concealed. A synthetic leather grab handle above the panel aids access. Snaps on the zipper pulls prevent accidental opening. Two G-hooks enable the front flap to convert to a sling for carrying larger items, such as a helmet ot jacket for instance. There’s a loop-faced strip at the bottom of front panel for an ID patch.
The zippered main compartment of the Dead Letter Sling measures 17.5″H x 13″W x 2″D, with a19″ diagonal length. It opens wide for access to a laptop sleeve that accommodates up to a 15″ laptop, zippered abrasion-resistant 100% nylon mesh pocket with key lanyard, a large loop panel for Tactigami™ and other hook and loop-compatible accessories, and two gear slots. The main compartment (and the concealed carry compartment) have a light-colored interior that improves interior visibility.
The zippered weapons-compatible concealed carry compartment at the rear of the Dead Letter Sling is sized to fit a compact PDW or SMG, measuring 19″H x 12.5″W x 2”D , with a 20″ diagonal length. It has loop lining for Tactigami™ and other hook and loop-compatible accessories, a sling attachment point and a Rapid Access Pull tab that provides quick access to the user’s firearm in an emergency. It has one of the fasted draws on the market. A firearm may be deployed from the compartment in three seconds or less. And if you don’t use the concealed carry platform for a firearm, it’s an additional compartment to carry other things.
The concealed carry compartment has two retention G-hooks to keep the flap from opening all the way. This allows the user to maintain a tight working space within the compartment, prevent unintended opening when accessing gear and concealing the contents when the compartment is unzipped.
The concealed carry platform accepts ballistic panels. The panels are inserted into pockets on the front and back of the compartment. The ballistic panel pockets are closed by a hook and loop flap. Together, the two ballistic panels can provide coverage of the torso and abdomen when the compartment is fully opened. The Dead Letter Sling comes with a plastic insert in the front ballistic panel pocket to provide rigidity.
