Terrorism is a concerning threat in today’s world, and it’s essential to be prepared and vigilant. Here are some safety tips to consider before, during, and after a potential terrorist incident. My biggest rule before leaving your home is to keep your nose out of your mobile phone. Don’t walk around lost in the sauce, while in public spaces like the shopping mall. Pay attention to your surroundings, and know where you are headed.

Before:

  1. Stay Informed. Stay updated on current events and potential threats in your area by following reliable news sources and official government advisories.
  2. Have an Emergency Plan. Develop a family or personal emergency plan that includes meeting points, communication methods, and evacuation routes in case of an emergency.
  3. Know Emergency Contact Numbers. Keep a list of emergency contact numbers, including local law enforcement, emergency services, and helplines.
  4. Report Suspicious Activities. If you observe anything unusual or suspicious, such as unattended bags or suspicious behavior, report it to local law enforcement immediately.
  5. Be Aware of Surroundings. Stay vigilant and aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places or areas with high foot traffic.

During:

  1. Follow Official Instructions. If you find yourself in an area where an incident occurs, listen to and follow instructions from law enforcement and emergency services.
  2. Seek Safe Shelter. If possible, move to a safe location, such as a building or secured area, and stay away from windows and doors.
  3. Stay Low and Quiet. If you are indoors during an incident, stay low to the ground and remain quiet to avoid drawing attention.
  4. Turn Off Mobile Devices. Silence your mobile phone to avoid making noise during a crisis and to conserve battery life.
  5. Be Cautious of Secondary Devices. After an initial incident, there may be secondary devices planted to cause additional harm. Remain cautious and avoid moving towards suspicious objects.

After:

  1. Check for Injuries. Assess yourself and others for injuries and provide first aid if needed. Call for emergency medical help if necessary.
  2. Contact Loved Ones. Inform your family and friends of your safety as soon as possible. Use text messages instead of phone calls to avoid overloading communication networks.
  3. Follow Authorities’ Instructions. Cooperate with law enforcement and follow their instructions during the aftermath of the incident.
  4. Be Cautious in Crowds. Avoid large gatherings or the site of the incident until authorities have declared the area safe.
  5. Seek Support. If you experience emotional distress or trauma after the incident, seek support from friends, family, or professional counseling services.

Remember that each situation is unique, and these tips are general guidelines. It’s crucial to rely on official information and follow the guidance of law enforcement and emergency services in the event of a terrorist incident. Being prepared and informed can help increase personal safety and contribute to community resilience during challenging times.
