There’s not a lot of information to be gleaned from the internet about the movie Surfing in AfghanistanThe story should be very interesting to servicemen, surfers and anyone looking to see a war movie with a point of view that hasn’t been done before in Hollywood. The Surfing in Afghanistan website describes their script as a modern-day Easy Rider meets Lawrence of Arabia.Their official page, also notes the movie is, “about a disillusioned American Marine and an Afghan National soldier who go AWOL and trek a across war-torn Afghanistan in a Volkswagen bus to go surfing a thousand miles away along the Pakistani coastline.”A little background should be given on surfing in Afghanistan. Afghanistan has plenty of mountains but no access to the sea. The war-torn country without a coastline recently became the 82nd member nation of the International Surfing Association (ISA).The country has been in a constant state of turmoil since the 1970’s yet that hasn’t stopped refugees and expats from starting the Wave Riders Association of Afghanistan (WRAA) in 2012. One of the interesting stories to track is of A. His family fled the country before the Taliban came to power. Though raised in Germany he was always fascinated by water and waves. He held a surfboard in his hands for the first time at age 19. He stated, “I knew I had just discovered something that I wanted to do for the rest of my life.”

Afridun Amu

Afridun Amu will be the first ever competitor representing Afghanistan in the upcoming ISA World Surfing Games. Afridun’s story is as normal as the character Lt. Kilgore from the movie Apocalypse Now wanting to surf with Lance Johnson, right? In fact, the idea of a surfer wanting to be one with nature, particularly in a place where war exists is darn right fascinating. odd, powerful and should be developed more. This could be a very good movie. Surfing appeals to many who believe it helps them get away from the daily grind of life. Imagine then men who want to get away from the grist mill that is war.Dedicated surfers not how the feel humbled by nature when they surf. They note surfing builds community, makes them healthier and happier, and teaches them patience.

Writer, Director, Producer RT Herwig wrote on the site, “What we’re working on is timely. With Surfing in Afghanistan, we’re trying to bridge this gap by creating a well rounded, less cliche middle-eastern “war” film. I say war film because it is set during the current conflict in Afghanistan, but it’s less of a let’s kill bad people war film than it is looking for freedom in a place where none exists. The time is right to tell this story. Thanks for hanging on. We appreciate it.”The little we know about the movie is actor Sammy Sheik is now attached to the feature film in the lead Afghan role of Atiq while Luke Bracey will star opposite of him as the U.S. Marine.
