The Ukrainian Poltava military airbase experienced a surprising and intriguing event on August 23rd when a Russian Mi-8 AMTSH (NATO: Hip) armored combat helicopter unexpectedly landed at the airfield. Initial reports from Russian propaganda channels suggested that the crew had become disoriented and landed at the base by mistake. Some even claimed that the crew had been attacked by the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU), resulting in damage to the aircraft and potential casualties among the crew.

However, as details began to emerge, a more complex and astonishing story unfolded. Ukrainian social media, led by journalist Yuriy Butusov, revealed that the helicopter’s landing was not accidental but part of a planned special operation conducted by Ukraine’s Directorate of Military Intelligence (HUR). The operation had been in preparation for six months and involved the pilot defecting from Russia to Ukraine.

The pilot’s family had been secretly moved to Ukraine earlier as part of the plan. The helicopter, supposedly transporting spare parts for Russian Su-27 and Su-30 multi-role fighters, provided cover for the pilot to carry out the operation. Upon landing at Poltava, Ukrainian forces secured the helicopter. However, the other two crew members reportedly resisted surrender and were eliminated by Ukrainian forces.

The Directorate of Military Intelligence confirmed that both the Mi-8 helicopter and the spare parts for the fighters would remain in Ukraine. The operation’s success is seen as a significant triumph for the HUR, as they managed to secure the helicopter and gather valuable intelligence without causing major disruptions.

Despite the unfolding details, the full scope of the operation and the names of the individuals involved remain closely guarded by the HUR. The event has captured public attention and is a testament to the complexities of intelligence operations in the midst of ongoing conflicts and geopolitical tensions.
