The upcoming “Robin Sage” combat training exercise is a significant event for soldiers aiming to earn the Green Beret and become part of the U.S. Army Special Forces. It is scheduled to take place from September 15 to 28. It will span across 26 counties in North Carolina and three in South Carolina.

This exercise serves as a crucial evaluation for soldiers seeking to join the ranks of the Green Berets. It is a longstanding and challenging test that has been a benchmark for over four decades. Participants in the exercise will engage in role-playing scenarios set in a fictional nation called “Pineland.” These scenarios are designed to mimic realistic warfare situations.

The exercise includes the participation of military service members who act as guerrilla freedom fighters, as well as civilian volunteers who play various roles within the fictional nation’s society. Participants may be involved in various training activities, including “controlled assaults” and other engagements. Residents in the vicinity might observe flares or hear blank gunfire as part of these exercises.

The “Robin Sage” exercise faced criticism in 2019, particularly in urban areas like Raleigh, where it was deemed disruptive. As a result, officials have taken measures to ensure safety and minimize disturbances during this year’s event. Successfully completing the “Robin Sage” exercise is a significant milestone for soldiers, as it marks their graduation from the Special Forces Qualification Course. Afterward, they move on to their initial assignments within the Army Special Forces.
