In a market awash with competition, Highland Tactical is making it’s mark. Delivering high quality products, with proven designs, solid form and function, and coming in at the right price point. I had a chance to review their Armour pack, and let me say upfront it’s one I would recommend.

Highland Tactical’s stated mission is to provide “the best value to those in the Tactical World. We strive to make quality products that will enhance the life of those that choose to – GET TACTICAL ®”  Their Armour pack lives up to this mission statement. Constructed of a heavy weight polyester that looks and feels more like standard Cordura, the pack offers a level of water resistance to help keep gear dry.

The outside of the pack is covered in MOLLE webbing, allowing you to expand the pack by attaching pouches of your choice and allowing for mission-specific configuration.  There are built-in drainage grommets to allow water to bleed out of the pack. The back panel of the pack is padded, with channels that allow air to flow helping keep you cooler and protecting you from any odd-shaped objects poking you in the back. Nothing worse than a pack that is skint on material when it should have sufficient padding to protect you.

The shoulder straps feature padded mesh, making them very comfortable and keeping them from getting overly hot when wearing the pack. In what has become more or less the industry standard, the straps are shaped and formed to make them more ergonomic for wear. This feature is a plus particularly for those who need extra padding. Not everyone is built the same and the padding helps those who are leaner and need more bulk.

They also feature two D rings on each shoulder strap for attaching whatever gear you may find necessary. The straps have plenty of adjustment in them, and in testing the buckles securing the adjustment in the straps was rock solid and did not move or loosen every-time I took the bag out for a hike.

There is also a fully adjustable and stowable waist belt. One more item of note is the adjustable sternum strap. The pack also features four compression straps, two on each side of the pack, each with plenty of take up to allow you to really cinch down and secure the load. There is a velcro area on the pack to allow for the attachment of identifiers, name tapes, moral patches and the like. There is also a “hidden” hydration tube port, which is covered by a flap and secured by velcro.

The zippers are smooth and easy to use, even with gloves. The zippers run the full length of the pack, allowing it to be fully opened, “clam shell” style, and laid flat open. The interior features a large, padded laptop compartment that doubles as a hydration bladder compartment. In testing it held a full size 15 inch laptop with some room to spare. Additionally the interior features multiple mesh pockets.

The main compartment of the pack has two mid-sized mesh pockets, perfect for holding any number of items and keeping them separate from the rest of your gear. The mesh keeps the items visible and the placement of the pockets keeps the items readily accessible. Then there is another, medium-sized compartment. In it, there is a large pocket and two smaller pockets. The multitude of pockets allow for plenty of organization of your equipment and allows you to optimize and customize how you store your gear.

Finally, there is a long horizontal compartment that runs the width of the pack and sits somewhat underneath the medium size compartment. This horizontal compartment also features a mesh pocket that runs the length of the compartment.
