Heart of Gold

2 min read

Heart:

the emotional or moral nature as distinguished from the intellectual nature: such as

a generous disposition compassion

  • a leader with heart

b loveaffection

  • won her heart

c courage or enthusiasm especially when maintained during a diffiicult situation

  • never lost heart

There are men of action and men of thought. Sometimes a combination of those two brings us brave intellectual powerhouses such as Hemingway, or TE Lawrence who test the waters and live out what they believe, and history will judge, whether it was good or bad.

Sometimes there are men who are too sensitive or too intellectual that will get lost in thought like Kafka, or Emerson or Nietzsche, or Wells. They lose compassion for themselves and for society and judge it rather harshly. Fear and loathing. Lost in too much emotion, lost in too much thought, intellectualizing everything and developing existential philosophies. Perhaps it’s better to act more and think less. Can we do both?

The “soldier” is the closest I’ve ever seen to strike that balance; the youthful, romantic dreamer who fights for what he believes in. Do and believe as you wish. My own thought is we should never stop dreaming and we shouldn’t stop testing the waters to see if what we believe holds water. Searching means to thoroughly scrutinize things, and even yourself, especially in a disconcerting way. That takes honesty and bravery to reveal who we truly are and some of us don’t like the answer we get. It also means putting yourself out there, literally, and sometimes that will come at a great cost. It means serving others and even getting injured physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. What are you willing to lose in order to gain?

“I want to live, I want to give
I’ve been a miner for a heart of gold
It’s these expressions I never give
That keep me searchin’ for a heart of gold
And I’m getting old
Keep me searchin’ for a heart of gold
And I’m getting old

I’ve been to Hollywood, I’ve been to Redwood
I crossed the ocean for a heart of gold
I’ve been in my mind, it’s such a fine line
That keeps me searchin’ for a heart of gold
And I’m getting old
Keeps me searchin’ for a heart of gold
And I’m getting old

Keep me searchin’ for a heart of gold
You keep me searchin’
And I’m growing old
Keep me searchin’ for a heart of gold
I’ve been a miner for a heart of gold”
