You are not alone…Somewhere out there is a soul just like ours and someone has dedicated a song just to you. Decades ago radio hosts brought people together simply by speaking into a microphone. Families gathered round communal areas and listened…The late journalist Walter Winchell used to greet America every night by radio, and though his career waned, at one time millions of people tuned in. He stated, “Good evening Mr. and Mrs. America, from border to border and coast to coast and all the ships at sea.” American DJ Casey Kasem ran American Top 40 from 1970 until 2009. Listeners could tune into the radio and dedicate a famous top 40 song to someone far away. Maybe it was an old love in Birmingham, Alabama or maybe a brother once seen in Michigan who hadn’t been seen in decades. The airwaves united millions of people from different walks of life like never before. So much has changed. We are fragmented now more so than before because of our common access to technology and like some odd diaspora we are carried forward by our iPhones willfully into our solitudes. Preprograming removes anticipation and an impatient or time-deprived generation doesn’t look forward to fire side chats, gatherings round the television for family shows, or tuning into live talk radio as it once did and honestly they can’t because things change, so who of us can blame people for tuning out? Radio 1 in the U.K. once held people in sway and the power it had! Selecting a playlist from Pandora has taken away the element of surprise. Podcasts do the same. We hung on the note of every newly released song or an old one which opened up our hearts. Sure there are similar platforms today to those olden ones and generations from now others will likely grow misty eyed over their lost pleasures. To our small Spotter Up audience we hope the best for you. Whether you find us on IG or elsewhere, we wish you well. Tonight should be an incredible night. Don’t tune out life. Find a way to connect despite where you’re at and what you’re going through. Whether you’re pulling a midnight patrol or getting started on the road to do a long haul, I say to you “Good night Mr. and Mrs. America, from border to border and coast to coast and all the ships at sea. Yep, that goes for everyone else out there too.
