Estonia’s Special Operations Forces (ESTSOF) have come a long way since their inception in 2008. Today, they stand as a shining example of expertise in unconventional warfare, gaining international recognition for their outstanding capabilities. ESTSOF has its roots in the Special Operations Task Group (SOTG), which was established in 2008. By 2014, it had evolved into a separate, highly specialized unit.

Currently, the force is under the capable leadership of Lieutenant Colonel Margus Kuul, who took over the reins in 2019 from Colonel Riho Ühtegi. ESTSOF has fostered significant relationships with NATO. They actively engage in missions such as strategic reconnaissance, cyber network operations, and personnel recovery, highlighting their commitment to international security.

Becoming an ESTSOF officer is no small feat. Their training spans approximately 3 years and involves continuous collaboration with international forces, with a primary focus on learning from the US Special Operations Forces. Estonia’s military vision for 2026 outlines a clear focus on enhancing intelligence, warning functions, and cyber capabilities. This signals their commitment to further growth and investment in their Special Forces.
