I recently had the chance to test out the 5.11 Tactical AllHaula 45-Liter Duffel. This bag is built to take a lot more than I could put it through. It comes in 45- and 65-liter versions.
First, the bag is a versatile companion for any outdoor adventure. It is crafted from weather-resistant TPU-coated 840D Nylon. The exterior boasts four robust handles, and each lower corner is equipped with a tie-down point. Additionally, a small zippered pouch on the top ensures that your pocket items stay within reach without getting lost in the depths of the bag.
I wish it came with an optional shoulder strap, but there are definitely several locations where one can be attached.
The bag is carried with a set of rugged stowable pack straps and a sternum strap.
Because I was also sent the Skyweight 24 Liter pack, I discovered that the pack’s removable waist belt can be attached to the AllHaula. (You can buy the waist belt separately.)
While I can’t imagine a load large enough to require a waist belt, it’s a great option if you haul heavy gear for a long distance.
The bag is designed for convenience, with a three-sided zipper allowing easy interior access. Inside, a removable zippered pouch serves as a compression strap to stabilize your load and doubles up as a handy organizer for your belongings. It’s perfect for compressing clothing if you plan to use it for travel.
By the numbers:
Comfort—3/5 Most duffel bags with pack straps are hard to carry. The load drops to the bottom, and the straps are often poorly designed. I thought 5.11 did a great job designing the padded top, which provides cushioning for your back, and adding straps that would be at home on any ruck. Adding the sternum strap and optional waist belt means you can carry a heavy load in relative comfort. I’m giving it a three only because it isn’t a backpack.
Durability—4/5 The pack is made of 840D Nylon and is well put together. I expect it will last a long time. All attachment points are reinforced, and the zipper is very heavy-duty. The bottom of the bag is also padded, which should protect both the bag and its contents.
Functionality—3.5/5 While it has some great features I mentioned above, like the compression bag, it’s a duffel bag. There isn’t much more to say. It’s durable, will carry a lot of stuff, and is easy to tie down to a vehicle or haul into a campsite. I got the bag in the color ‘Old Gold,’ which I was skeptical about, but it has grown on me.
Weight – 4/5 The bag weighs under three pounds. I loaded it down with at least forty pounds just to walk around the neighborhood. I can’t imagine using it to carry much more than that, but it easily carried the load in relative comfort.
Value –4/5 The bag retails for $140.00, but as I write this, it is on sale for $111.00. I think that’s a pretty good deal. It is a duffle that should last you a long time and take a lot of abuse.
Overall rating – 4/5 It’s a solid bag that I know I will be beating the hell out of for years to come.
The AllHaula’s dimensions are:
10.5″H x 22″L x 11.5″D
Weight – 2.7 lbs / 1.22kg
Capacity – 2,746 cubic inch / 45-liter
