Paul R. Howe is a retired Master Sergeant and a highly esteemed veteran of the United States Army Special Operations. Born 1959, Howe’s journey into the elite Delta Force is a testament to his dedication, skills, and bravery.

Paul Howe’s military career began in 1983 when he enlisted in the United States Army as an Infantryman. He displayed exceptional skills and leadership qualities during his initial training, which set the foundation for his future in Special Operations. In 1988, he successfully passed the rigorous selection process, earning his spot in one of the most elite and secretive military units in the world.

During his time in Delta Force, Howe became an integral part of numerous high-stakes operations and missions, both domestically and internationally. His expertise included counter-terrorism, hostage rescue, and direct action operations.

One of the most significant events in Paul Howe’s military career was his participation in the Battle of Mogadishu in 1993. As part of Task Force Ranger, he was involved in the operation to capture Somali warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid. The mission took a tragic turn, resulting in the deaths of several U.S. soldiers, including two Delta Force operators. The events of the battle were later depicted in the book and movie “Black Hawk Down.” Howe was first to arrive on the scene of the downed Black Hawk helicopter. He was the leader of the assault team that went in to rescue Army Rangers and Delta Force members in Mogadishu. Mark Bowden met with Howe in 1997 about writing the book after clearing it with Howe’s commanding officer.

After retiring from the military in 2000, Paul Howe continued to contribute to the defense and law enforcement communities through his company, Combat Shooting and Tactics (CSAT). He is a firearms instructor and counterterrorism expert who trains people in high-risk operations. As a firearms and tactics instructor, he shared his extensive knowledge and experience with military personnel, law enforcement officers, and civilians, aiming to improve their tactical proficiency and survivability.

Paul Howe is also an accomplished author, having co-authored the book “Leadership in the Shadows” with Tom Satterly, another Delta Force veteran. The book offers insights into leadership principles gleaned from their experiences in the Special Operations community. Additionally, Howe serves as a consultant for the firearms and defense industries.

Throughout his career, Paul R. Howe has exemplified courage, resilience, and a commitment to excellence. His contributions to the military and law enforcement communities continue to impact those he has trained and influenced, leaving a lasting legacy of professionalism and expertise.

Howe is married to Constance “Connie” (née Beckwith), a former Army Reserve major and the daughter of Delta Force founder, Col. Charles Alvin Beckwith.
