5.11® has launched a number of new apparel items as part of its Fall 2021 Collection. Included among these is the 5.11 Coalition Pant and Stratos 1/4 Zip Pull-Over Top. 5.11 sent me both for review.

The Coalition Pant is a versatile eight pocket casual pant suitable for everyday wear. It’s made with ultra-durable 9.5-oz cavalry twill with elastane for functional stretch, then stonewashed.

5.11 Coalition Pant

5.11 originated the concept of the tactical pant. Originally designed and sold by Royal Robbins as utilitarian pants for mountain climbers, they were adopted by the FBI Training Academy in 1992. The company name 5.11 comes from the rating system used by mountain climbers to rate the difficulty of climbs, with 5.11 being the most difficult at the time.

Although tactical clothing draws less attention these days because its practical attributes have made it quite popular, and not just with the tactical crowd, there has been a trend towards lower-vis tactical clothing that blends in without sacrificing performance. The whole concept of the gray man involves blending in with the crowd, not drawing undue attention, and masking one’s skills and weapons. And, quite frankly, tactical look aside, traditional cargo pants are less than stylish for everyday wear.

300x250

The new Coalition Pant is a continuation of 5.11’s quest to meet the needs of end users looking for lower-vis tactical clothing that doesn’t sacrifice performance. It is a traditional utility style casual pant that is suitable for everyday wear. It combines the look of standard jeans or khakis with the capability of cargo pants. The pant doesn’t look at all “tactical.” It has a straight fit that provides a tailored look without being tight.

The body of the pant is built in a rugged and hard wearing 9.5-oz 98% cotton and 2% elastane blend cavalry twill for comfort with just enough function stretch. The pant is enzyme stone washed with a softener and then brushed on both sides for permanent softness. The fabric is designed to fade over time, achieving a washed down appearance.

The Coalition Pant features a fixed waistband with zipper and logo button closure, reinforced belt loops with center back webbing loop that fit up to a 1.75″ belt, and eight pockets to keep your gear at hand. It has angeled front hand pockets for easy access with a right coin pocket, back body patch pockets, two front thigh drop pockets, and a back right body utility pocket. The pockets have [+] logo rivet reinforcement. The pocketing is 4.7-oz 87% polyester/ 13% elastane plain weave Traverse™. The pant has a 5.11[+] woven label at back right pocket and [+] embroidery at back left hip/side seam.

The Coalition Pant is exceptionally comfortable with enough stretch to allow a full range of motion without being restrictive. The brushed twill fabric feels soft to the touch. It is durable, breathable, tear-resistant, and easy to care for. It is also resistant to wrinkles, creases and shows less dirt and stains.

The Coalition Pant is available in Granite, Ranger Green, and Volcanic. MSRP is $80.00. It is imported.

The Stratos 1/4 Zip is a technical and stylish all-season pullovers constructed with a durable polyester/elastane-blended fleece with moisture wicking, anti-odor and stretch properties, plus raglan sleeves to provide comfort and a full range of motion.

5.11 Stratos 1/4 Zip

The Stratos 1/4 Zip is a pull-over top that is designed to be worn either as a mid-layer for cold temperatures or for worn by itself. The body is constructed from a durable 6.1-oz 91% polyester/ 9% elastane blend stretch grid fleece jersey that provides functional stretch.

The polyester/elastane fabric is moisture wicking and anti-odor. Moisture wicking is important for warmth in cold weather. It wicks heat-robbing moisture away from the body, making it an ideal mid-layer fabric.

Water conducts heat 240 times faster than air. A wet body will lose heat much faster than a dry one. Cotton, for example, is a poor insulator for its weight, retains moisture and is slow to dry out. When cotton gets wet it ceases to insulate. Cotton fabric can adsorb up to 27 times its weight in  water. Synthetic fibers are hydrophobic and resist the absorption of water.

The zippered center front opening on the Stratos 1/4 Zip provides additional heat management. The quarter zip front features an internal chin guard and zipper garage for protection. Other features include a brushed tricot-lined stand-up collar, raglan sleeves, and tagless heat transfer main label for additional comfort. There is a 5.11 [+] woven label at front left hem.

Comfort is essential. Mid layer tops in cold weather should be insulating. They should also have easily adjustable ventilation for versatility. The Stratos 1/4 Zip meets these criteria. It also looks great when worn alone, which is an added plus

The Stratos 1/4 Zip is available in Ranger Green, Turbulence, Black, and Cinder. Regular length only. MSRP is $70.00. It is imported.

A Women’s Stratos 1/4 Zip is also available. It features Princess seams for a more feminine silhouette. The Women’s Stratos 1/4 Zip is available in Peacock, Black and Ox Blood. Regular length only. MSRP is $70.00. It is imported,

Conclusion

The Coalition Pant and Stratos 1/4 Zip are excellent additions to the 5.11 Fall 2021 Collection. They are stylish, comfortable and well-designed and well-made using top quality materials.
