I spend a lot of time outdoors, so I am always looking for good eyewear. I know what fits my face, which is generally the Asian fit. It’s a smaller frame that fits with the shape of my face. Wiley X send me the JAKL to review. These are Matte Black, with a Tan Frame and the CAPTIVATE™ Non-Polarized Tungsten Mirror sunglasses. They retail for $150. After putting them through their paces, here’s my take on how they perform.
The JAKL’s aesthetic is a standout—sleek yet rugged, with a matte black and tan frame that screams tactical cool without being over the top. The high-wrap design not only looks sharp but also provides excellent coverage, blocking peripheral light effectively. The frame is made of lightweight Triloid nylon, which feels durable yet comfortable for extended wear. Dual-injected rubber nose pads and temples ensure a secure, slip-free fit, even during sweaty activities. My only minor gripe is that the tan accents might not appeal to everyone’s taste, but I found them a nice contrast to the matte black.
The sunglasses meet ANSI Z87.1+ standards for high-velocity and high-mass impact protection, and the shatterproof Selenite™ polycarbonate lenses are built to take a beating. I didn’t test them against projectiles (I’m not that adventurous), but knowing they’re ballistic-rated gives peace of mind for range days or rugged outdoor pursuits. The included microfiber drawstring bag and zippered hard case are practical additions for storage and transport.
The CAPTIVATE™ Non-Polarized Tungsten Mirror lenses are the star of the show. Wiley X’s proprietary CAPTIVATE™ technology enhances color contrast and clarity while filtering out harmful light, making these lenses ideal for varying light conditions. I tested them in bright sunlight and overcast conditions, and they delivered crisp visuals with vibrant colors—greens and browns popped, which was great for spotting trail markers or targets. The grey-based lenses provide 100% UVA/UVB protection and block blue light (HEV), reducing eye strain during long outdoor sessions.
Unlike polarized lenses, these non-polarized ones don’t eliminate glare from reflective surfaces like water, which might be a drawback for fishing or boating. However, for general outdoor use, the trade-off is minimal, as the lenses still reduce harsh light effectively. The oleophobic and T-Shell coatings are a nice touch, keeping the lenses smudge-free and scratch-resistant. After a week of dusty trails and sweaty hands, a quick wipe with the microfiber bag had them looking pristine.
Weighing in at roughly 30-40 grams (depending on accessories), the JAKL is lightweight enough for all-day wear. The wraparound design hugs the face comfortably, and the rubberized nose pads and temples kept the sunglasses in place during runs and range sessions. I have a medium-sized head, and the fit felt snug without pinching. The interchangeable lens system is a big plus, allowing you to swap lenses for different conditions (though additional lenses are sold separately). I didn’t experience fogging, even in humid weather, thanks to the frame’s ventilation and lens coatings.
The only reason I didn’t give a perfect score here is that those with larger heads might find the wraparound fit a tad tight. I’d recommend trying them on if possible, though Wiley X’s 60-day return policy has you covered if the fit isn’t right.
At $150, the JAKL isn’t cheap, but you’re paying for premium materials, ballistic-rated protection, and advanced lens technology. Compared to other tactical eyewear brands like Oakley, the JAKL holds its own in quality while offering a unique style. The versatility is a major selling point—whether you’re at the range, on a trail, or just running errands, these sunglasses perform and look good doing it. I believe there is free shipping and a 30% military/first responder discount through ID.me to sweeten the deal.
The main downside is the lack of polarization in this model, which might deter those needing glare reduction for water-based activities. If that’s a priority, Wiley X offers polarized versions of the JAKL for a higher price (around $210). Still, for most outdoor scenarios, the non-polarized tungsten mirror lenses are more than capable.
Final Thoughts
4.3/5
The Wiley X JAKL Matte Black and Tan Frame with CAPTIVATE™ Non-Polarized Tungsten Mirror sunglasses are a fantastic choice for anyone seeking durable, stylish, and protective eyewear. They excel in comfort, lens clarity, and rugged performance, making them a go-to for outdoor enthusiasts and tactical users alike. While the non-polarized lenses may not suit every situation, their color-enhancing technology and robust build make them a versatile option. If you’re after sunglasses that can keep up with your active lifestyle while turning heads, the JAKL delivers.
