When I reached out to Benchmade’s reps to review a small knife suitable for federal buildings, they introduced me to their Immunity series, which includes the Full, Auto, and Partial Immunity knives, all featuring blade lengths at or under 2.5″. Some critics claim that small-blade knives are just glorified box cutters, but that’s not the case. A well-crafted knife, even with a small blade, will always outperform a cheap utility blade, which is typically sold in bulk (100 blades for under $10.00), lacks durability and the same functionality.
For those unfamiliar with federal building regulations, many agencies restrict knives with blades longer than 2.5 inches. Some even have security personnel who may randomly inspect employees’ bags for prohibited items. The list of restricted items includes things like bladed tools, firearms, striking devices, and explosives. Certain items, like ceremonial swords or kitchen knives for events, may require special waivers signed off by the head of security. Anyone wanting to bring in a ceremonial sword to cut a cake for the annual Marine Corps birthday, or a carving knife to cut meat for an agency picnic must go through a check-in process. Having a small knife for federal carry is ideal for many reasons.
If you’re looking for a compact knife with a blade under 2.5 inches, whether manual or automatic, the Immunity line is an excellent choice. Many federal buildings allow only law enforcement officers, authorized agents, or employees to carry knives with blades longer than 2.5 inches. Workers in fields like healthcare, IT, and maintenance who regularly open boxes could benefit from a well-made knife like this. While a box cutter could do the job, a sleek small knife like the Immunity looks more professional, especially in business environments where formal attire is required. Let’s be clear, this is go-to brand for office workers, laborers, military, law enforcement, and EDC enthusiasts alike.
Benchmade sent me two out of the three knives in their Immunity Series. I was given the Auto Immunity, and the Full Immunity.

These are remarkable small folding knives. Despite its size, it demands the same level of craftsmanship as a larger knife, particularly when using premium materials. It’s a standout for everyday carry (EDC) enthusiasts.
The knife has an overall length of 5.95 inches and boasts a durable blade with the same toughness, precision, and performance you’d expect from a larger model. While I’m typically a fan of manual knives, Benchmade’s automatic opening system has impressed me with its smooth, reliable action. The crossbar lock secures the blade, and the safety block prevents accidental deployment by locking the crossbar until manually released. This feature adds peace of mind, ensuring no unintended openings.
Once you’re familiar with the mechanism, the knife opens effortlessly, making it perfect for those who value both speed and precision. However, there’s a slight learning curve—if you’re not accustomed to the system, it might be tricky at first, especially with the potential for recoil or misfiring.
The CPM-M4, is a strong semi-stainless steel steel blade and is as tough as it is sharp. It holds its edge even after extensive use in EDC tasks like cutting through packaging and whittling wood. The thumb jimping on the blade’s spine adds extra grip, making the knife effective for detailed work. This is great as an extra knife. It’s something you can throw in your backpack, or small pants pockets. The small attached lanyard assist when pulling the knife out of a pocket, and helps with flicking the knife open. There are three impressions along the length of the handle, so I consider this a three-finger grip knife. The CPM-M4 steel is very strong and the blade is corrosion resistant. It is not rust resistant. It has a nicely centered blade.
Though compact, the Immunity series of knives are true workhorses for daily tasks. The aluminum handle and solid lockup make it feel incredibly robust, one of the most secure small knives I’ve used. It has a surprising amount of control for a knife of this size.
Price and Final Thoughts
Okay, let’s clear it up.
The Partial Immunity has a blade under 2″ and ambidextrous Auto AXIS mechanism for $325.00
The Full Immunity has a 2.5″ blade for $300.00
The Full Immunity has a 2.5″ blade and ambidextrous Auto AXIS mechanism for $325.00
At a retail price of about $300, the Benchmade Immunity series with small blades are not inexpensive. However, the premium materials—like the CPM-M4, a strong semi-stainless steel and machined aluminum—along with the exceptional build quality and innovative automatic opening mechanism, justify the price for those seeking a top-tier pocket knife.
I’ve tested numerous knives, and the Immunity are a favorite. If you’re after a small, reliable knife that excels in performance and portability, this one is worth the investment. This knife offers pretty solid bang-for-your-buck. They are built in the USA, and don’t have the same low quality as many knives made in China that sell for $100.00; there simply is no comparison. Every knife is hand-assembled and sharpened by highly trained technicians.
Who Should Buy It?
The Immunity line-up is perfect for those who want a high-performance EDC knife in a compact, easy-to-carry package. While it may not be suited for heavy-duty tasks like food prep or bushcraft, it shines in everyday situations where precision, strength, and portability matter. Its price might be a barrier for some, but for those who value quality, reliability, and longevity, the Benchmade Immunity knives are little knives that deliver big on performance. My main concern with this knife is its price. At a $300 MSRP, it’s quite expensive for a knife of this size — especially considering that for about $230-$250 that can get you a range of excellent full-sized premium EDC knives. While the quality and material selection do help justify the price, it still feels like a significant investment. Knives such as the Partial Immunity that are California-legal and under 2″ in blade length, ensure its legality in all states. For me, being able to carry at work in a federal building is a must, and knowing that these are Benchmade is enough for me.
