Thrasher is a U.S. Army Green Beret combat veteran, whose credentials include law enforcement SWAT, high risk protective work in non-permissive environments, and counter terrorism direct action missions—done both unilaterally and with foreign special forces.
“High Threat CQB was developed because, quite simply, I noticed a massive training disconnect between what I was asked to do in training, and what really occurred in the real world,” said Thrasher.
Officers often get a lot of training based on theory – not on reality or human behavior. As a result, when they find themselves in a real threatening situation, they eject what they’ve been taught and have to either improvise, or they fail to execute anything that would keep them or the suspect most safe.
88 Tactical’s High Threat CQB begins in a classroom, where students study human behavior by watching and evaluating videos of real-world encounters. The rest of the class is hands-on, starting with individual skills – how to maneuver with a weapon safely, how to maneuver safely around teammates in a CQB environment. Then the focus shifts to simple tactics, such as: use of cover, how to take a corner, and how to work with a partner to clear a room or structure in a CQB environment. After the basics, students move on to force-on-force drills, where they work against human opponents.
“We put you under duress, we make you make real-world decisions against human actors – that’s where the methodology is proven,” said Thrasher.
High Threat CQB utilizes a limited-penetration methodology, because the last place you want to be is in close confines with a suspect who may be armed with a knife or gun. This gives officers the chance to address those people from a greater distance, from a greater position of safety. A better position allows them to make better decisions, and if needed, it gives them more precision.
This limited-penetration methodology is very flexible, allowing for an adaptable, situation-based approach. Officers can utilize the same tactics as a single patrol officer or as a team, and at varying speeds (deliberate – dynamic – rescue). The High Threat CQB system is behaviorally compliant, which makes the curriculum easier to train and retain under duress, allowing for a tactical advantage and reduced liability.
88 Tactical’s upcoming High Threat CQB schedule includes classes in Minnesota, Washington, Ohio, North Carolina and Florida.
