Tom Cruise, the star of the original Top Gun movie, confirmed the long-rumored sequel on Wednesday during an interview on the Australian morning show “Sunrise.” Asked about the plans, Mr. Cruise, 54, said “It’s true” several times, before adding that shooting would probably begin in the next year. The actor announced that not only is a sequel to the 1986 classic “Top Gun” really going to happen, it will start filming soon.

“I’m going to start filming it probably in the next year,” Cruise, 54, said during an appearance on the Australian TV show “Sunrise” on Tuesday.

“I know. It’s happening. It is definitely happening. You’re the first people that I’ve said this to.”

Joseph Kosinski who directed Cruise in “Oblivion” is the front-runner to direct “Top Gun 2” for Paramount and Skydance Pictures. For those who’ve never seen Top Gun here is the rundown:

“Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell is an expert United States Naval Aviator. When he encounters a pair of MiGs over the Persian Gulf, his wingman is clearly outflown and freaks. On almost no fuel, Maverick is able to talk him back down to the carrier. When his wingman turns in his wings, Maverick is moved up in the standings and sent to the Top Gun Naval Flying School. There he fights the attitudes of the other pilots and an old story of his father’s death in combat that killed others due to his father’s error. Maverick struggles to be the best pilot, stepping on the toes of his other students and in another way to Charlie Blackwood, a civilian instructor to whom he is strongly attracted.”~ John Vogel IMDB.com

Val Kilmer the actor who played the character Iceman was asked if he would come back for Top Gun 2. His reply was: “Hell yes. What a hoot it will be…”
