This picture is not at the Savannah Airport.
The picture was taken on a Friday, like 10 May 2013 near Stockbridge Massachusetts. The Marines in the picture are from MWSS-472 & MASS- 6 Westover ARB Chicopee, Massachusetts.
The fallen Marine was a mortarman killed during a training accident in Nevada. Someone had introduced a second round into the mortar pit resulting in a double charged heavy mortar. Everyone in and around the pit was killed.
How do I know all this? I’m the SSgt in the back leading the detail. I retired from active duty five days later.
