The Ulfhednar company is based in Kløfta, Norway, near the capital city of Oslo. They are the largest gear supplier for shooting sports in Norway. Their gear is built to withstand the harsh arctic conditions, they hold their manufacturers and sub contractors to the same standards. They create and make products that are durable and reliable. Several of their products are versatile with multiple uses and customizable to your preferences. Their gear needs to be weatherproof, not California weatherproof, but arctic winter weatherproof. The majority of their gear are soft goods, but make no mistake there is nothing soft about them. I tried two different support pillows to use with my new rifle.
First, was the Angled Support Pillow, a medium sized, oblique support cushion used to gain stability when shooting off barricades or uneven surfaces. This bag has two straps that velcro over the rifle chassis or stock and barrel and is filled with super light fill. The velcro extends down the side of the bag, allowing the straps to get adjusted to just slightly bigger than the bag itself. Making this bag able to fit a wide variety of rifles or over your forearm for positional shooting. There is a grab handle on the large end of the bag with a loop to connect a carabiner and an additional loop on the corner of the small end. It ships with an ITW Tac Link. The small end has a velcro secured zipper to change out the fill, with a branded rubber T-handle Zipper pull. The whole bag is made of heavyweight Cordura and the bottom of the bag is covered with Top-grip brand rubber mat for sure grip on almost any surface. This support bag is an exemplary product to showcase the trademark characteristics of Ulfhednar’s gear, durable and versatile.
The second product was an ARCA Platform with a support pillow attached. The ARCA Platform is bombproof, its a large machined one-piece adapter with an interchangeable clamp. Meaning the clamp can be switched to the opposite side for users preference. The platform has four slots that allow it to be velcroed to the support pillow and will likely fit other brands of similar shape. On one end there are slots that you could secure the ARCA platform and pillow to 550 cord or a carabiner when not in use. The ARCA Platform slides over your rifles ARCA Rail for use. It is a bit bulky but because of its aluminum construction doesn’t weigh as much as you would think. The support pillow on the other hand is filled with their heavier fill, some kind of small black steel like shot. When this is attached to your rifle it is as stable as locking into a tripod. Think sandbag. The bag is made of the same Cordura as the Angled Support bag and has a nylon loop for connecting a carabiner. There is a short zippered opening on the side if you need to adjust or change out the fill again making this bag customizable to the user’s needs.
Final Thoughts: These support bags are built tough and ready to withstand any abuse you can throw at them. The versatility of the Angled Support Pillow makes it a every range day kind of bag. This support bag will make it into my long range kit for range days. The ARCA Platform with Support Pillow is pretty heavy but your rifle wont move when you are employing it. I would recommend any of Ulfhednar’s products if you are a hard use kind of shooter. Check them out at Optics Planet or their website.
By the numbers:
Comfort – 4/5 Not really applicable to these bags, but if you had to hump the ARCA Platform and Support pillow around they would grind on you, especially attached to your rifle forend.
Durability – 5/5 Bombproof, born out of the harsh conditions found in the tundras of Norway. As expected.
Functionality – 5/5 The support pillows function as designed and the Angled Support Pillow can be used in a variety of ways to support your rifle or limbs when trying to find a stable shooting platform.
Weight – 4/5 As stated the ARCA Platform and fill of the attached support pillow are pretty heavy and would definitely weigh on you when carrying attached to your rifle. Changing out the fill might help a bit.
Value – 3/5 Ulfhednar’s gear is quite a bit more expensive than other quality support bags, however, I will say they are built with the quality materials you would expect to see for paying those prices.
Overall rating – 4.2/5 The cost and weight of these two products from Ulfhednar brought the rating down from some very high quality material and manufactured soft goods for me.
