The Hunter FZ Gen.3 Tactical Softshell jacket is purpose built and fashionable. It’s a premium softshell aimed at military, law enforcement, hunters, and serious outdoor users — and it shows in both the design and the price. I was very excited when I opened the box. I could instantly tell that this is a well-built product, as I’ve owned many tactical jackets from different brands over the years.

I love the Woodland Camo pattern. To give you an idea of the fit, I  have a lean, athletic build, I weight 175lbs and stand 5’9″ tall. I ordered the jacket in a large size. It fits me well.  It has a clean, professional look that avoids the overly bulky “operator jacket” aesthetic. The cut is athletic but not restrictive, with articulated sleeves and a slightly longer back that helps when wearing a plate carrier, backpack, or sitting in a vehicle.

Mind you, a quality tactical jacket should more than just an article of clothing—it is a critical piece of equipment designed to provide protection, comfort, and reliability in demanding environments. Whether used by military personnel, law enforcement officers, outdoor enthusiasts, or everyday individuals facing harsh weather conditions, a well-made tactical jacket offers durability that withstands heavy use while maintaining freedom of movement.

The jacket is made of Polymide and Elastane, while the inner lining is Polyester.  The outer fabric shell is ribbed, and it feels pretty substantial but soft right away. The inner shell/lining is very soft and pliable. It’s good for field use, stretchy enough for movement, and clearly built to take abuse. Zippers, stitching, and seam work are all top-tier. We’re getting into summer next week, so I haven’t had the chance to try out the windproof and water-repellent softshell material features. The jacket, as advertised is made to handle light rain, snow, and strong wind extremely well. It’s not a full hardshell, so in a prolonged downpour you’ll eventually want rain gear, but for 90% of cold-weather field conditions it should perform impressively. I will have to get thru this hot summer, and wait until fall to see how well it fares it colder, wetter conditions.

High-quality tactical jackets are engineered with advanced materials that resist wind, rain, abrasion, and temperature extremes, helping the wearer stay focused and effective when conditions become challenging. Strategic pocket placement, reinforced construction, and functional features allow users to carry essential gear securely and access it quickly when needed. While a cheap tactical jacket may seem like a good way to save money, it often leads to frustration, poor performance, and additional replacement costs over time. I’ve noticed this many times with pilling, and permanent wrinkling occurring on the cheaply made tactical gear I’ve purchased.  Take note, tactical jackets must be designed to function in demanding conditions, and cutting corners on quality usually means sacrificing durability, weather protection, comfort, and reliability.

UF PRO clearly designed this for active use. The stretch panels and ergonomic cut make a noticeable difference compared to cheaper tactical jackets that feel stiff or boxy. I have a few cheaply made jackets and pants that I purchased, figuring that the low price I pay is worth some measure of quality but that’s never the case. Buy good gear. I only wear my old gear for when I’m gardening or working on my car; they are useless for tac purposes. Always purchase the best that you can afford.

I’ve worn the jacket twice in the early cold mornings, before the day got too hot. The jacket did well. The lined interior should add warmth without making the jacket overly heavy. It works best in cool to cold weather; in mild temperatures it can feel a bit warm during high-output activity.

The pocket layout is smart and usable. The large chest pockets are accessible even with a backpack or carrier on. The arm pockets are well placed for admin items or gloves. There are internal pockets that add useful storage without creating bulk. Everything is positioned with real-world use in mind, not just appearance. Poorly designed pockets that are difficult to access or unable to support gear weight. There is a good amount of space on the sleeve to slap your favorite patch!

UF PRO gear has a strong reputation among professionals for longevity, and the Hunter FZ Gen.3 fits that reputation. After extended use, the jacket tends to maintain its shape and performance better than many mainstream tactical brands. I like the softness of the jacket, and it can be easily wrapped into a ball or folded, and stowed into a bag.

What I Liked

  1. Excellent wind resistance – keeps you warm even in harsh gusts.

  2. Comfortable, athletic fit – moves naturally with your body.

  3. High-quality construction – premium materials and stitching throughout.

  4. Thoughtful pocket design – practical for tactical and outdoor use.

  5. Versatile appearance – works for hunting, range days, travel, or everyday wear.

What Could Be Better

  1. Price – this is a premium jacket at $265.00 , and the cost reflects that. It’s significantly more expensive than many tactical softshells. Again, you get what you pay for. Cheap goods only last for so long. Costly goods, last a very long time; there’s the expectation that they are made well.

  2. Warmth range – best for cool/cold conditions; it can run warm during intense activity in mild weather.

The Hunter FZ Gen.3 is ideal for hunters needing a quiet, weather-resistant outer layer. This jacket does come in different colors and would be perfect for military or law enforcement professionals wanting a durable field jacket. It comes in the colors Black, Brown Grey, Steel Grey, and Navy Blue. It would serve outdoor enthusiasts as well, who prioritize mobility and wind protection. It’s probably overkill for casual urban use unless you simply appreciate high-end technical clothing.

After spending time with the UF PRO Hunter FZ Gen.3 Tactical Softshell Jacket, it’s clear this isn’t your average outdoor shell. Many budget tactical jackets are manufactured with lower-grade fabrics, weak stitching, and inexpensive hardware that can fail when exposed to regular wear or harsh environments. What appears to be a bargain initially can quickly become more expensive when the jacket wears out prematurely and needs to be replaced. Investing in a quality tactical jacket also means investing in long-term performance. Inferior garments often fail when subjected to repeated stress, while premium tactical jackets are built to endure years of hard use. In situations where comfort, protection, and preparedness matter, a dependable tactical jacket can make a significant difference in both safety and performance.

Let’s go over UFPRO gear. They design clothing that offers improved freedom of movement, reduce fatigue, and maintain comfort during long periods of wear. Their garments are constructed from premium materials and reinforced in high-wear areas to withstand rugged terrain, heavy use, and challenging weather conditions. While UF PRO gear may cost more than budget alternatives, its durability, comfort, and performance often result in a lower cost of ownership over time because the gear lasts longer and performs better. Pay for a jacket, and you’ll be happy with its lasting endurance.
