I recently taught a shotgun breaching instructor course in Indiana and decided to use my old Remington 870 for the class. To upgrade it, I installed the Urbino Stock and some additional sling attachment mounts from Mesa Tactical, and the experience was kickass.

Installation & Build Quality

The Urbino Stock attached with virtually no effort—quick and easy. Made from black polymer, it feels extremely durable yet lightweight, which is critical for high-intensity training. The Mesa Tactical hardware is top-notch quality and fits perfectly, making it an excellent choice for retro shotguns. The Urbino design reminded me of the Benelli buttstock pistol grip, which speaks to its ergonomic appeal.

Performance in Real Training

Over two days of close-range demonstrations and breaching techniques, the Urbino Stock performed flawlessly. It handled recoil from both 2¾-inch and 3-inch shells without issue, maintaining stability and comfort throughout. The sling attachment point worked perfectly, even with a breacher sling, adding versatility for tactical applications.

Ergonomics

The pistol grip is well-suited for moderate-sized hands, but when wearing breaching gloves, the grip angle felt a bit tight for my larger hands. This is something to consider for users with bigger hands or heavy gloves.

Value & Versatility

For the money, this is an excellent addition to your shotgun. It can bring new life to older scatterguns, especially if you’re upgrading from traditional wooden hardware. I removed the original wood on my Remington 870 and replaced it with synthetics, including the Urbino Stock—and I couldn’t be happier with the quality and toughness.

Mesa Tactical was kind enough to allow me flexibility in my tactical review, and as someone who’s probably older than the shotgun itself, I can say this upgrade is worth it. I began carrying a shotgun in a patrol car back in the late ’80s and early ’90s, (yes I am that old) when the shotgun was our primary long gun unless you were on a SWAT unit. The Remington 870 remains an icon—still one of the best shotguns for hunting or personal defense. Its pump action cycles anything and is extremely reliable, and the Urbino Stock only enhances that legacy.

Pros
• Strong yet lightweight polymer construction
• Easy installation with high-quality hardware
• Excellent recoil management
• Sling attachment point works well even with breacher slings
• Comfortable grip for moderate hand sizes
• Great value for revitalizing older shotguns

Cons
• Grip angle may feel tight for large hands, especially with gloves

Final Verdict

The Urbino Stock is a top-tier upgrade for the Remington 870, combining durability, comfort, and tactical functionality. All the hardware is built very well with quality. Whether for breaching, hunting, or personal defense, this stock delivers exceptional performance and value. It is highly recommended for anyone looking to modernize and enhance their king of battle boomstick.
