A few weeks ago, I was given the opportunity to observe Law Enforcement Officers (LEO) competing with their duty weapons at an NRA-hosted event. As a prior LEO myself, I wish I had known that such events were offered to the LEO community when i was on the job. I would like to bring awareness to the LE community what the NRA has to offer specifically designed for you.

NRA offers special shooting competitions for LEO, member of the U.S military and private sector law enforcement officers only. NRA has designed courses of fire specifically with LEO training in mind. Techniques such as “cutting the pie” and clearing rooms, are incorporated within the stages. NRA hopes these competitions encourage all LEOs from all agencies and departments to compete. All while giving the opportunity to come together in a fun relaxed environment and train with one another. NRA understands the standard qualification course becomes monotonous, and does little to truly improve your skills.

One of LEO’s biggest problem with weapons training is that they do not get enough trigger time to practice and apply their skills. Shooting a paper target 40 to 50 rounds quarterly, to meet the department’s minimum standard is one thing, but having to apply critical thinking while maintaining their weapon fundamentals under moderate stress while being timed is another.

NRA Tactical Police Competition (TPC) utilizes a combination of pistol, rifle, and shotgun throughout the match. Each course is designed to challenge the officer’s skills in the use of their duty firearms and equipment. It presents typical challenges officers may face in their job, such as assessing threat and non-threat targets, firing from unusual shooting positions, making tactical decisions of how to move through a course, all while balancing the paramount need for accuracy with speed.

Upcoming Events:

  • September 22 or 23, 2018 Albuquerque, New Mexico
  •  November 2 or 3, 2018 Fairfax, Virginia

Don’t have a shotgun or rifle? The NRA Police Pistol Combat Competition presents the same challenges as the TPC, utilizing handgun/pistol only.

Upcoming Events:

  •  September 8, 2018 Lebanon, PA
  •  October 13, 2018 Albuquerque, NM
  •  October 13, 2018 Lebanon, PA
