My buddy retired. A true warrior. A true believer who worked so hard in life not to compromise himself. A gang banger who turned his life around, took care of a son at the young age of 16, and then served this nation. He spent 26 years away from his two boys. Now he’s home. I recall the sacrifices he made. I was listening to Bob Dylan this evening while running, had me thinking. How many of us have to walk away from something that we loved that simultaneously injured the ones we loved? That’s a hard pill to swallow. Whatever your old purpose, whatever your new purpose, and whatever scars from old wounds that never really healed, I hope you’ll spend some time truly looking inward. Ask yourself how can I make things right with my family? Experience new feelings that allow you as a fighter to begin anew and become something different. Retirement isn’t the end of your journey. Ask hard questions and come up with honest answers: What is the meaning of life, why did this person die, what value can I provide in this world, why did they take a good man, how can I truly love my family, what are the steps to be there for them, how can I learn from this, did I learn from this, what will become of my life, now what? If you are honest and sincere with your feelings you can regenerate. Recover and begin anew. Do it now.

Mama take this badge from me
I can’t use it anymore
It’s getting dark too dark to see
Feels like I’m knockin’ on heaven’s door
Knock-knock-knockin’ on heaven’s door
Knock-knock-knockin’ on heaven’s door
Knock-knock-knockin’ on heaven’s door
Knock-knock-knockin’ on heaven’s door, eh yeah
Mama put my guns in the ground
I can’t shoot them anymore
That cold black cloud is comin’ down
Feels like I’m knockin’ on heaven’s door
Knock-knock-knockin’ on heaven’s door
