To Extend or Not to Extend: Xtreme Precision Extended Pivot and TDP

Intro

When it comes to ARs, pivot and takedown pins are nothing special. They are generally the standard mil-spec ones that do the same thing all the others do. Some companies have created some with dimples to help pull them to the open position, some make them lock with a small detent, and then we have Xtreme Precision that made some extended pivot and take down pins. I’m not usually one to add extended parts on my rifle but sometimes you come across a worthwhile addition that gives you an edge or just makes things slightly easier. The Xtreme Precision Extended pivot & Take Down Pin built for the AR15 style rifles may just be one of those worthwhile additions.

Features

The Xtreme Precision Extended pivot & TDP came in a simple plastic bag inside an envelope. Each set comes with the extended Pivot and Takedown Pins, 5 detent pins, and a set of springs. From my initial impressions the CNC machined hardened and plated steel are very well made. Each pin has an extended griping surface which for some ARs could be a god send. On the opposing side there is a small concave spot for which is said to help if you had to use a tool to push the pin. I haven’t had to use it because the griping surface on the opposing side is more than sufficient.

Testing

Installation was exactly what you’d expect, it was as easy as your method for installing them. Just a tip wear eye protection because the little detents like to jump out at you. So how do you test a product that takes little to no wear? You install it and go shoot. I shot a lot and opened and closed my upper just for the giggles because cleaning isn’t something I do often. The ease of use was awesome and it quickly won me over. I have standard pins on one of my lowers that I simply hate now, when I really didn’t care until I was spoiled by Xtreme Precision Extended pivot & TDP. I will say if you have an ambi-safety and actually use the lever on the ejection port side, then the Xtreme Precision Extended Take Down Pin will get in the way. If you are like me and enjoy the standard milspec safety, you’ll enjoy this product. Something that worried me was the snagging issue you get with most extended products. I still haven’t had any issues and will update this if I do.

Conclusion

Some Products out there are a real waste sometimes and I see them on the internet or at shows and shake my head in disbelief that someone would buy them. The Xtreme Precision Extended pivot & TDP are not one those products. It is actually a piece of gear that I really like and will continue to use. Whether you hate using tools on the pins or you store your AR in 2 pieces, these are a functional addition to your rifle and I want more.
