I recently received the Kubaton Pen by 5.11 Tactical to review.

As a writer, I’m picky about my pens, but as someone who travels OCONUS a lot, I like the idea of carrying something that can be used as an unobtrusive, airplane—and customs-friendly tool.

The Kubaton pen I received was in sandstone.

It is also available in black. Other than the 5.11 branding on the clip, it does not stand out at first glance as overly tactical, although it does feature a textured barrel that provides a very solid grip.

The pen is lighter than I expected. It is constructed of 1.17 ounces of anodized aluminum.

Steel pocket clip

Although several reviews complained that the steel pocket clip bent easily, I found it to be solid. I’m not sure if it has been upgraded, but I have been carrying it daily, either in my pants pocket or clipped to my notebook, and I don’t foresee it bending under normal use.

The barrel of the pen unscrews to provide access to the ink cartridge, and it takes replacement cartridges from the Fisher PR series, Rite in the Rain 37R, 47R, 57R, and Schmidt EasyFlow 9000 series.

Twisting the barrel extends and retracts the tip. It comes with a medium black ink cartridge that writes smoothly and without skipping. It does not write upside down, but I do not frequently find myself doing that.

At 5.4″ in length and .51” in diameter, it is similar in size to a standard self-defense Kubaton.

When gripped in the fist, it provides volume and rigidity to the hand while punching. When centered, both ends protrude about an inch, which is ample to target pressure points. By holding it with a thumb on the top and the pointy end extended from the hand, it gives two inches of pen that would definitely do damage to the face/neck.

Non-threatening blunt instrument.

The website describes it as a “non-threatening blunt instrument.”

At $34.00, it is a solid investment that provides a little peace of mind while traveling.
