Some want to see the World from a Different Perspective

4 min read

A mile of road can take you a mile, but a mile of runway can take you anywhere in the world.  I have been flying airplanes for seven years now and want to share a different outlook I have on life from aviation.  Do you remember as a young child gazing up at the stars, wanting to be up in the sky soaring with the birds, or wanting to see the world from a different perspective?  Thats what I experienced as a young man and want to share with you a new way to view flying. Flying can be breathtaking and frees you from the world’s stresses.

Flying aircraft is an overwhelming workload; from managing engine power, watching the aircraft gauges, maintaining a smooth and level flight, operating communication channels and so much more.  Sometimes it is a lot to do, but you begin to find a flow to the system and over time it is like riding a bicycle.  Flying aircraft is nothing compared to what life throws our way on the ground.  From the workload we live with daily, to the stresses of relationships, financial stability, and sometimes even the lack of control over many situations we face in our lives.  Day in and day out we face so many stresses in our life that sometimes we just want to crumble from the vast amount of pressure in our lives.  Sometimes we impose more hardships on ourselves than necessary and others we just become overwhelmed.

This is where I found flying to be my freedom from the world below.  From the moment I am wheels up off the ground, I am free.  As I begin my climb out to a cruising altitude, I have many task at hand, but I am free.  I am in complete control of my actions and in that very moment all the precursors of stress are left on the ground as I soar above the world below and find solace in my life.  As many people use the gym as an escape from their day to day lives and hardships we face; I do just that with aviation.  I am in control of my life in that very moment, both capable of flying to any destination I want, or just enjoying the peace and tranquility of the beauty of the world.  Viewing cars on the ground as ants in a line, homes, buildings, and more as a puzzle piece placed on the ground, I am the one puzzle piece breaking free and finding my own place.

A mile of runway can take you anywhere in the world and as the power comes in and we begin to roll down the runway to lift off, all the hardships, burdens, and stresses of the world are left on the ground below.  I find that time to reflect and live in the moment, without distractions from  the above factors previously stated.  As I level off, find my cruising speed and travel to an unknown destination I am able to see the world from a different perspective.  Instead of looking up to the skies, imagining soaring in the clouds like birds, I am looking down on the world and seeing it for the beauty that is. For me this is my freedom, my escape as you may say from the problems we all face day in and out.

Here is some helpful info if you want to learn to fly: The cost of flight training varies widely, but you should be able to get a private pilot license for around $10,000, depending on the location, type of airplane used, type of flight school, instructor experience, and the pace at which you are able to learn. In fact, about the only limitation to start the training to learn to fly would be the student’s ability to pass a basic medical exam. Even children as young as 11 or 12 years of age can begin to take flying lessons as long as they are tall enough to be able to reach all of the controls of the aircraft!

For the Private, the minimum is 40 hours – 20 with an instructor and 20 solo – but most students take 60-80 hours. Note that these figures represent only flight time, and do not include time spent on ground school or personal study. The biggest factor in determining how long training will take is how often you fly.

If you don’t want to fly there are many other things you can do that are very positive and invigorating. For those of you looking to find that solace and place of rest from the worlds hardships, I encourage you to find something that both challenges you and allows you to reevaluate, explore, and see things in a different state of mind.  You may find that this brings both peace from the chaos and find beauty in things we once would overlook in this life.
