Ask them: Have you ever known what was in your father’s heart and the things he had to bear? Have you seen or known his scars, carried on his body or more deeply upon his soul? Can you recall your history, his history, the stories in fact each story that should be told? The bright glimmer in some men’s eyes belie the tragic tales they could tell. They have personal losses that amount to some incredible hells. Some fathers seem cursed to live, suffer and die while other are blessed and savor life. Can we ease burdens, can we preserve that time, can we preserve something that’s worthwhile telling? If they have something to say then make them legends in your children’s memories.
