If I Should Fall From Grace with God

3 min read

We fall from planes, we fall from grace, we fall in our dreams and we even fall to our knees. We descend freely because of the force of gravity, and leave our erect position sometimes suddenly and involuntarily. Though standing erect feels more safe and natural than falling we sometimes fall by choice. If we do fall involuntarily sometimes it’s because we tripped or we fell to ruin, in defeat and failure, and Heaven forbid we never fall down dead or fall because we are permanently wounded.

Sometimes men voluntarily genuflect and lower their body briefly by bending one of their knees to the ground as a sign of respect or worship. Perhaps they go even lower as if kowtowing to something. No matter, there is much to learn about ourselves when we fall by choice or force. The playwright Oscar Wilde once wrote, “We are all in the gutter but some of us are looking at the stars.” The line was spoken by the character Lord Darlington as he confessed his love and was rejected by Lady Windermere. We can understand his sentiment. Darlington understands that there is a distance between himself and the stars, between him and her, and what is reachable and what is unobtainable.  He cannot have her. He looks up from his gutter, which is used to carry surface water to the sewer, and understands as he longs for her that he feels he will never be worthy of this woman, this bright star.

No one will ever be convinced of your sincerity, of the seriousness of your sufferings, unless you show them. However men who cannot realize their inherent value just might let themselves be carried down with the sewage of life. We cannot always get what we want but if we focus on what is divine and our sacred sacraments we will realize there isn’t a chasm at all between ourselves and the sublime. Fall more often than not and before you get up dwell on why you need to stand up each time, and pursue with fervor what you can pursue. You’ll find the stars are closer than you think.

If I should fall from grace with god
Where no doctor can relieve me
If I’m buried ‘neath the sod
But the angels won’t receive me
Let me go, boys
Let me go, boys
Let me go down in the mud
Where the rivers all run dry
This land was always ours
Was the proud land of our fathers
It belongs to us and them
Not to any of the others
Let them go, boys
Let them go, boys
Let them go down in the mud
Where the rivers all run dry
Bury me at sea
Where no murdered ghost can haunt me
If I rock upon the waves
Then no corpse can lie upon me
It’s coming up threes, boys
Keeps coming up threes, boys
Let them go down in the mud
Where the rivers all run dry
If I should fall from grace with god
Where no doctor can relieve me
If I’m buried ‘neath the sod
But the angels won’t receive me
Let me go, boys
Let me go, boys
Let me go down in the mud
Where the rivers all run dry
